Single contact point

The Single Contact Point coordinates and supports the work of the German Data Protection Authorities at the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).

The tasks of single contact point (German abbreviation „ZASt“)

In the federal German system, which is unique throughout Europe, and which includes data protection supervisory authorities of the Federal Government and of the 16 Länder (Federal States), the single contact point coordinates the cross-border cooperation with the other Member States of the European Union, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Commission. The ZASt is established at the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, but organisationally separated from that authority.

As single contact point, the ZASt shall enable the supervisory authorities of the other Member States, the EDPB and the European Commission, to communicate effectively with the German supervisory authorities, without any knowledge of the national distribution of competences.

The ZASt does not perform any tasks of a data protection supervisory authority, and it is not active in the external relationship vis-à-vis citizens, authorities and companies. It only performs tasks relating to the cooperation of the German and European supervisory authorities. The ZASt does not accept complaints or requests relating to data protection law.

In connection with concrete enquiries and complaints about data protection issues, please take note of the competences of the respective data protection supervisory authorities. Under this link, you will find information about these authorities.

The BfDI (The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information) advises and controls the public bodies of the Federal Government (Federal authorities, Federal ministries).

In the private sector, the BfDI advises and controls only telecommunications- and postal service companies, and private companies coming within the provisions of the Security Clearance Check Act.

For contact enquiries, the filing of complaints, the reporting of data breaches or the publication of the contact details of the data protection officers, the BfDI’s website provides contact details and online forms which you can find under this link.
