G7 Privacy Advocates and Privacy Authorities want to advance DFFT

The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI), Professor Ulrich Kelber, is satisfied with the outcome of this year’s G7 Roundtable of the data protection and privacy authorities: We have agreed to work together on the basis for a free and trusting flow of data, focusing on the protection of citizens’ personal data. For this path of the “Data Free Flow with Trust” or DFFT, we will advertise at our respective governments.

The data protection and privacy authorities thus confirm the agreement of the G7 Digital Ministries of May 2022: A free, global, open, interoperable, reliable and secure Internet can only exist with democratic values and human rights. Data protection is a key element for this. Within the framework of the G7, we will strive to promote legal similarities and high standards of protection in the instruments for international data transmissions. In addition, we have decided to consolidate the G7 Roundtable of the data protection and privacy authorities through annual meetings. Our final statement shows that we have taken important steps on one path, which is admittedly still long.

This year Germany chairs the G7. The BfDI had therefore invited his colleagues from the G7 countries to his headquarters in Bonn. On 6 September, he officially welcomed the delegation leaders with a reception on the Petersberg.  In this regard, the BfDI said: “Last year, our first meeting as data protection and privacy authorities within the framework of the G7 could only take place as a video conference due to the pandemic. I was therefore very glad to welcome my colleagues personally in Bonn.”

At the end of the three-day Roundtable, the G7 data protection and privacy authorities have published a joint final statement with the results of the conference.
