BfDI's continued commitment to data protection at the Schengen external borders
Date 2024.11.26
The BfDI is once again chairing the ETIAS Fundamental Rights Guidance Board.

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Visitors who do not need a visa will soon be able to use the system to apply for travel authorisations to enter the so-called Schengen area. The requirements will affect around 1.4 billion third-country nationals from over 60 countries when travelling to 30 European countries.
In this context, an independent ETIAS Fundamental Rights Guidance Board has been established. Sebastian Hümmeler, Deputy Head of Division 31 (General Affairs, International Affairs in the Area of Police and Justice), represents the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) there. Mr Hümmeler has now been re-elected for a second term in his capacity as Chair of the Guidance Board and will thus continue to promote respect for fundamental rights and in particular data protection and non-discrimination in the new ETIAS European Travel Information and Authorisation System.
