Information on confidentiality:
The Federal Commissioner has the right of refusal to give testimony (Section 13 para. 3 of the Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG)), thus he may also remain silent before the court and may withhold his documents from any third party. You can confide in him without having to fear that anything will be disclosed to third parties.

Public PGP key of the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information

Information is transmitted openly on the Internet. If no special precautions are taken to ensure confidentiality or integrity, unauthorised persons can take note of messages or change them. The BfDI therefore supports the exchange of confidential messages via the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) or GnuPG programs. You can download the public part of the BfDI's PGP key here.

For your own safety, you should make sure that nobody but you can gain access to your secret key. We recommend the use of PGP keys with a length of at least 2,048 bits, 4,096 bits would be even better. You can find information about encrypted communication, for example, on the website of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). If you want to send an encrypted message to, it is best to proceed as follows:

  1. Install GnuPG or PGP on your computer.
  2. Download the public key to e-mail address to your computer and include it in your public key ring (pubring.pkr). Then please check whether the key ID and fingerprint match the information on this page.
  3. Save the information to be sent in a file (e.g. attachment.txt) and encrypt it with my public key.
