Freedom of Information

Freedom of information grants everyone the right to access to official information from the federal public authorities. The Freedom of Information Act (IFG) aims to strengthen trust between the state and citizens by making public administrative action more transparent and comprehensible for citizens.

Anyone can appeal to the Federal Commissioner for Freedom of Information if they consider their right to access to information pursuant to the Federal Freedom of Information Act to have been violated. More: The ombuds function according to the IFG (Freedom of Information Act)

The Environmental Information Act (UIG) regulates access to environmental information. While the IFG is a federal act that was initiated by members of the German Parliament (“Bundestag”), the UIG is based on a European directive and is therefore subject to many influences relating to European law.
